(Press release)
Shell Temir Petroleum Development BV is pleased to announce first oil from the Saigak field in Kazakhstan. Oil will initially be produced from the Saigak-2 wall for about three months to appraise the Saigak reserves and determine reservoir characteristics.
The Temir Block is held jointly by Shell Ternii and its partner Veba Oel Kasachstan GmbH. Shell is the operator under the terms of the Temir Production Sharing Contract.
Shell and Vebas first production in Kazakhstan is being transported to an oil terminal in nearby Shubarkuduk, located some 150km south of Aktobe. The first rail cars, carrying some 1200 tonnes of crude oil, left Shubarkuduk on 10 October for export.
Christian Bukovies, General Manager of Shell Temir, said: To go from a standing start to oil sales in two years has been quite a challenge, but we have a strong team who have all pulled together to produce this result. The next target is to reach a decision on full field development early in 2000.
John Park, Shell Temir Exploration and Development Manager, said: This is a very important step for Shell Temir. The major challenge ahead however is to prove up an export route and show that a field of limited size in this location may be a commercial proposition.
