Timur PANKOV
ALMATY, April 22 (THE GLOBE)
Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (Lenin) was born April 22, 1870 in Simbirsk (now Ulyanovsk), situated on the bank of river Volga. His parents descended from Russian intelligentsia of different levels. His father Ilya Nikolaevich Ulyanov was born in low middle class family in city Astrakhan. The grandfather of Lenin was a son of peasants and himself was a serf.
Mother of Vladimir Ilyich, Maria Alexandrovna was a daughter of Alexandr Blank a talented doctor, pioneer in the sphere of physiotherapy.
The family and College
There was always peace and agreement in family of Ulyanov. Lenin wasnt the only child. There were eight children (two of them died young). Vladimir Ilyich was the fourth child in family. The rest children, Anna and Alexandr, Vladimir and Olga, Dmitry and Maria was pairs of almost the same age. Parents did their best to grow them honest, diligent and sensuous. Later all of them but Olga(who passed away young) became a revolutionaries.
From the early years of his life, Lenin received from father the duty to be strict to himself and his duties. Vladimir Ulyanov was growing up a healthy and joyous child. He always was a leader in all games. When he was five years old he started reading. Many hours he spent reading books.
From nine to seventeen years old Vladimir Ulyanov attended classic college in Simbirsk. At this age was already seen his self-discipline and organization. Every morning at seven sharp he got up (no one had waken him up), went to wash and then made his bed. Before the lunch he had a time to repeat his homework and half past eight he was already at college, the way to which was rather long. This way he had been doing during eight years of his study.
In college he showed himself as very clever and diligent. Having been smart he became the best pupil; every time he was awarded with the highest prize. Among his contemporaries he was known as good swimmer, skier and chess player.
Forming of revolutionary point of view
The childhood and youth of Vladimir Ulyanov was in the atmosphere of severe reaction that time in Russia. All actions, showing brave thoughts, were punished. Later Vladimir Ilyich characterized this time as period of unbridled and incredibly thoughtless and brutal reaction.
Lenin was much affected by his older brother Alexandr, who was for him an indisputable authority. While growing up, Lenin hadnt stopped respecting his brother but instead increased. From his brother Lenin had found out about the Marxist literature he saw a book of Marx: Capital.
Revolutionary mood of youth was seen even in his college writings. Once the head of college F.M. Kerensky (father of famous A.F. Kerensky), who always admired his writings, said to him: What do you mean by writing about oppressed classes?
March 1, 1887 his older brother Alexandr was arrested and found guilty in assassination on czar Alexandr III. May 8 the same year he was punished in Schlisselburg fortress.
The young Lenin was shocked but the death of his older brother had made his revolutionary point of view even stronger. Nevertheless Lenin didnt choose the way his brother had chosen. No, we will not go that way he decided its wrong way.
At the end of June of 1887 family of Ulyanov left Simbirsk and moved to village Kokushkino. After living there one month they moved again, this time to city Kazan. Here Lenin continued his study in the University on faculty of law. Lenin studied social disciplines as he decided finally to start a revolutionary fight. Now he said it is time to learn politic economy.
Young Lenin was fond of reading. Especially he liked book of writer Chernyshevsky What to do? the favorite book of his older brother. In this book author described the shape of revolutionary, fighter for the freedom and happiness. Lenin liked this book so much that summer 1881 during a few weeks he had read it five times or more and every time he was finding new ideas.
Famous events and consequences
At the Second Congress of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party (1903), he caused the split between the Bolshevik and Menshevik factions. Following the February 1917 revolution, he returned to Petrograd (St Petersburg) from Zrich, and urged the immediate seizure of political power by the proletariat under the slogan All Power to the Soviets. In October 1917 he led the Bolshevik revolution and became head of the first Soviet government. At the end of the ensuing Civil War (191821), he introduced the New Economic Policy, which his critics in the Party saw as a compromise with capitalism and a retreat from strictly Socialist planning. On his death, his body was embalmed and placed in a mausoleum near the Moscow Kremlin. In 1924 Petrograd was renamed Leningrad in his honor, but since the collapse of Communism the city is once more St Petersburg.

Young Kazakhstani Jazz Musicians Travel the World to Share the Universal Message of Music
Tagir ZARIPOV, Almaty Youth Jazz Band Director
ALMATY, April 22
(Specially for THE GLOBE).
(Marina Khonina translation into English)
The language of music is universal. Music doesnt know any borders, it unites people, no matter how different they are. Although this statement may apply to any music style, jazz music seems to be the best example of the democracy of art, and music in particular. Musicians from all around the world seek to share their inspiring message of sounds and harmonies with each other, as well as with the people around them. To perform in a different culture, in another country, when the musician becomes a nonpareil ambassador of his or her land, creating a unique kind of understanding between people of different backgrounds, at the same time emphasizing the beauty of a persons individuality, isnt that a perfect way of establishing peace in our restless, conflict-filled world?
Such an experience was granted to the Almaty Youth Jazz Band directed by Tagir Zaripov in the beginning of this year, when, after much careful consideration, it was chosen to attend the 26th Annual IAJE (International Association of Jazz Educators) Conference in Anaheim, California. However, the overjoyed young musicians were saddened by an unexpected incident that prevented some of them from attending the marvelous event held in January 1999. A sudden influenza burst caused a significant part of the band to stay home during the Conference, while their fellow performers, that fortunately stayed well, left for the United States.
Upon their arrival, the part of the band that was able to come was immediately immersed into the creative atmosphere of the Conference. The outstanding jazz musicians of our time, such as Herbie Hancock, Billy Taylor, Freddie Hubbard, Ell Gray, Arturo Sandoval, Bob Mintzer, were among the guests of the convention. Among the memories of the band is not only this opportunity to meet with the jazz performers well-known around the world and to gain new insights into the mystery of music, but also the warm reception by the hosts.
This wasnt the bands first attendance of such an event. In fact, many Conference participants remember the bands performance at the 25th Conference of this kind that was held in New York City, when the Almaty band was recognized by appearing on CNN.
The essential music literature and recordings were acquired by the band during the visit to California. The new repertoire, enriched with the melodies and rhythms of the state (which is the home to Disneyland), was performed to the enjoyment of listeners on March 26, when the band presented a concert dedicated to Nauryz, the Kazakh New Year. Jazz-lovers of Almaty will have another opportunity to hear the band perform on 29th of April, at a concert in honor of Duke Ellington, the renowned musician, conductor and composer, whose 100th anniversary is celebrated this year.
Such tremendous steps in the development of jazz in Kazakhstan would doubtlessly be impossible without the necessary help from people, who show their involvement by supporting the Almaty Youth Jazz Band. The band would especially like to thank the Exxon company for making the trip to the IAJE Conference possible, as well as the Bobek Fund. It would also like to show appreciation to KLM Royal Dutch Airlines for offering five free tickets and considerable discounts on airfare.
The Almaty Youth Jazz Band is infinitely thankful to the following sponsors who have provided support for the upcoming concert: USIS (United States Information Service), Almaty Tobacco Co./ Philip Morris Joint Stock Company, Mobil Oil Kazakhstan. A great thank you to you all as well as to Radio NS for the informational assistance.
The band gratefully welcomes potential sponsors that are willing to support the young musicians in their quest to share the joy of music with everyone!
